아디포랩스와 대표님은 20년 넘게 다양한 의료기기를 개발해오셨습니다. 먼저 그간의 소회에 대해 말씀 부탁드립니다.
열심히 최선을 다한 시간이었습니다. 2000년 통증완화 치료기기 개발을 시작으로 현재 암 치료기기 개발에 이르게 되었으며, 고주파를 이용한 다양한 의료기기를 개발하고 있습니다. 지난 20여 년 동안 저희 아디포랩스의 여정은 크고 작은 수많은 사건들의 연속이었습니다. 그중 가장 기억에 남는 일은 2015년 10월 식약처로부터 국내 최초 고주파 온열 암 치료기기로 승인받은 것입니다. 저희는 수년간 식약처의 허가를 받기 위해 노력했으나 줄곧 보완과 반려라는 고배를 마셔야 했습니다. 처음 허가를 신청한 당시에는 국내 의료기기 제조업체 중 고주파를 통한 암 치료기기로 허가를 받은 업체가 없었습니다. 그리고 해외에서 허가받은 나라도 미국, 독일, 헝가리, 일본 4개국이 전부였으니 국내 기술로 암 치료기기 허가를 받는다는 것은 계란으로 바위치기와 같이 어려운 일이었습니다. 모든 것이 처음이었기에 5년 여 간 포기도, 절망도 많이 했습니다. 고려대에서 동물 심부열 임상실험을 진행하면서 전 세계 수많은 논문들을 찾아서 1MHz 이하에서 안전성을 증명해야 했고, 국내 의학박사들의 암치료 의견서도 받아야 했습니다. 이뿐만 아니라 의료기기 전기, 전자파 안전 승인은 물론 공장 생산시설 GMP 허가 승인에 이르기까지, 수많은 난관과 부딪히면서 막대한 자금을 조달하는 과정이 지금 생각해도 너무 힘든 시간이었습니다. 하지만 저를 가장 힘들게 한 것은 허가가 날 수 없다는 주변의 부정적인 시선들이었죠. 이런 어려움 속에서 허가를 받았기에 지금은 매우 소중한 기억으로 남아있습니다.

대표님은 고주파 온열 암 치료기기 ‘리미션1℃’를 국내외 의료기기 시장에 보급하는 데 총력을 기울여오셨습니다. 현재 국내 및 해외 진출 현황은 어떠한가요?
당사의 리미션1℃는 현재 서울성모병원, 강남세브란스병원, 대전대학병원, 원광대학병원 등 주요 병원에서 암 치료기기로 사용되고 있으며, 기타 종합병원과 요양병원, 의료원, 개인병원 등 전국 100여 곳에 납품되어 생명 연장의 꿈을 실현시켜드리고자 노력하고 있습니다. 2018년에는 세계할랄연맹 무하메드 진나 회장과 파트너십을 체결, 할랄 인증은 물론 샤리아 인증을 획득해 이슬람권 국가들의 무슬림을 위한 의료기기로도 주목을 받고 있습니다. 이슬람권 국가에서는 수술이나 항암제 등의 독성 성분으로 치료하는 게 종교적으로 금지돼 있기 때문에 리미션1℃가 우리 몸이 가지고 있는 면역세포들의 면역력을 상승시켜 암과 수많은 질병을 치료한다는 개념이 신이 허락한 제품으로 인식되며 관심이 집중됐고 이에 따라 중동 국가들과 꾸준히 상담과 진출을 진행하고 있습니다. 아울러 대한민국 핵심 정책이었던 아세안 신남방 국가에 대한 적극적인 협력 추진과 맞물려 싱가포르, 말레이시아, 태국, 필리핀, 인도는 물론 중국, 카메룬, 앙골라, 카자흐스탄, 우즈베키스탄, 온두라스와 러시아 등에 꾸준한 상담과 전시, 세미나를 통해 리미션1℃의 치료 효과를 입증하며 글로벌 시장을 확대하고 있습니다. 아쉽게도 코로나 팬데믹으로 해외 진출이 다소 지연되고 있으나 위기 속에 기회라고 하지 않습니까? 저희는 코로나19 치료기기로도 그 해답을 찾으려 합니다.

대표님은 지난해 코로나19 극복을 위한 국제 의료 협력체 IVRA에 핵심 후원사로 동참하셨습니다. 출범 이후 IVRA는 어떤 활동들을 해오고 있는지요?
코로나 팬데믹이 지속되면서 코로나19와 같은 바이러스가 열에 약하다는 의학적 이론을 기반으로 2021년 9월 29일 코로나 팬데믹 종식과 관련한 의미 있는 국제 학술회의를 서울 삼성동 코엑스 컨퍼런스룸에서 개최했습니다. 40여 명의 국내외 의료 관계자와 각국 대사관 인사들, 그리고 세계 30여 개국 100여 명의 의료계 인사들이 랜선으로 참여한 가운데 성황리에 세미나를 마쳤습니다. 이후 국내외 의료 관계자 및 각국 정부 관계자들의 문의가 쇄도했습니다. 이때 결성된 IVRA(International Virus Research Alliance), 즉 국제바이러스연구협력회는 백신을 통한 감염병 예방에 중점을 두지 않고 위드 코로나 시대를 대비하는 치료 단계를 마련하는 데 중점을 두고 있습니다. 특히 리미션1℃를 사용해 코로나 환자를 치료하고 치료 데이터를 확보하여 위드 코로나에 대비하고 국제적 협력을 이끌어내는 것이 저희의 목표입니다. 리미션1℃가 온열치료와 면역치료 효능으로 코로나19 같은 바이러스성 질병치료에 대한 새로운 의료 패러다임을 제시하는 게임체인저가 될 것으로 내다봤기 때문입니다. IVRA는 여기에 머물지 않고 2차 총회를 통해 향후 치료 방향과 연구 성과를 국내외에 공유하자는 계획을 수립해 오는 6월 25일 국제 콘퍼런스를 개최합니다. 이 자리에 국내외 400여 명에 달하는 의료 관계자 및 회원국 정부 인사와 의료진을 초청해 콘퍼런스를 성공적으로 진행하고 그 후속 방안을 계속해서 마련할 계획입니다. 21세기 들어 바이러스성 전염병은 5년을 주기로 찾아온다고 합니다. IVRA를 통해 각국 관계자들은 바이러스 감염에 온열치료와 면역치료가 효과적이라는 원리를 기반으로, 전염병 환자를 치료하고 중증으로 발전하는 것을 방지하는 데 고주파 온열치료가 유효하다는 인식을 같이하고 있습니다. 또 인류의 오랜 숙원인 암 치료에 있어 리미션1℃가 이미 효과가 있다는 것이 검증된 상황에서 암 치료와 통증 완화에 대한 치료 사례 발표 등으로 그 위상을 높이는 것이 이번 IVRA 학술 세미나를 후원하는 목적입니다.

코로나 팬데믹이 엔데믹으로 접어들고 있지만 여전히 많은 사람들이 코로나19에 감염되고 있습니다. 이에 따라 고주파 온열 치료기기를 통한 코로나19 치료가 더욱 각광받을 것으로 예상됩니다.
리미션1℃의 작동 원리는 정교하지만 의외로 단순합니다. 고주파 의료기기의 고주파를 인체에 통과시키면 (+)(-) 전하의 교차로 인해 인체 세포 내 이온 전하의 회전, 충돌, 뒤틀림 등으로 마찰열이 발생합니다. 이를 심부열이라고 하는데 인체 심부의 온도가 상승하면 혈액순환 촉진과 함께 면역력을 향상시켜 열에 취약한 염증과 바이러스 감염세포, 그리고 암을 치료하는 것이 고주파 온열 치료기기의 주된 원리입니다. 더불어 통증까지 완화하고 부작용이 적은 검증된 의료기기라고 할 수 있죠. 여기서 주목할 점은 고주파를 인체에 통전하여 심부열이 발생하면 체온 상승에 따라 우리 몸의 자가 면역세포인 NK 셀의 활성도가 최고치까지 활성화된다는 점입니다. 이러한 NK 셀의 활성도가 높아지면 바이러스도 잡을 수 있다는 의료계의 판단이 코로나 환자를 치료하는 계기가 되었던 것입니다. 이는 감기 초기에 몸을 따듯하게 하고 열을 내면 감기가 쉽게 낫는 이치와도 일맥상통합니다. 앞으로 다가올 수많은 바이러스를 우리 몸이 스스로 치료할 수 있게 노력하겠습니다.

그렇다면 6월에 열리는 IVRA 콘퍼런스 이후 아디포랩스의 더욱 두드러진 행보가 기대됩니다.
지난해 5월 서울성모병원, 충남 서산의료원과 코로나19 치료와 관련한 연구협약을 맺고, 리미션1℃를 서산의료원에 기증하고 이를 통해 코로나19 환자를 치료했습니다. 그 결과를 IVRA를 통해 발표했으며, 그 연구 결과가 국내외의 주목을 받게 된 것입니다. IVRA 유승모 위원장(충남 예산 명지병원장)은 “코로나19와 같은 전염성 질병은 한 나라에 국한된 문제가 아니며 아무리 해결을 해도 변이가 계속된다. 백신 개발에는 한계가 있어 기존 진단과 백신 방식이 아닌 면역으로 치료 가능성을 확인하는 IVRA 행사가 미래를 대비하는 중추적 역할을 할 것”이라고 강조했습니다. 저희 해외영업팀 한예은 팀장에 의하면 아세안 국가는 물론 중동, 아프리카 차드, 남아메리카 온두라스 등에서 문의가 빈번하여 IVRA 지원 정책에 맞춰 상호 정책지원과 데이터 공유를 전제로 협의 중입니다. IVRA 회원국에서도 고주파 온열 치료기기를 통한 코로나 치료가 일상화될 것으로 전망하고 있습니다. 또 이란과 터키 정부와도 현재 장비 관련 프로젝트를 활발히 진행 중이며, 특히 지난번 IVRA 세미나에 참여해 축사를 전했던 UNWHD 모하메드 진나 회장은 현재 싱가포르 정부, 남아프리카공화국, 이스라엘뿐만 아니라 모리셔스 정부와 프로젝트를 진행하기 위해 활발히 논의하고 있습니다. 이 밖에도 말레이시아 아디포랩스 지사에서는 현재 말레이시아 MOH(보건성)를 포함해 필리핀과의 프로젝트에서 한발 더 나아가 리미션1℃ 기증과 관련한 일정을 조율하고 있습니다. 위드 코로나 시대의 서막을 알리는 과정인 셈입니다. 현재 위드 코로나 시대를 대비하는 유일한 대비책은 고주파 온열 치료기기라고 자부하며, 향후 IVRA의 치료 데이터 공유를 통해 얻어진 결과로 잘 디자인된 코로나 치료 프로토콜을 바탕으로 치료 케이스를 늘려나가고 국제적 석학들과의 공동 연구도 지속할 예정입니다.

아디포랩스의 앞날은 매우 밝아 보입니다. 단기적 목표와 장기적 비전은 어떻게 세우고 계신지요?
아디포랩스는 현재 말레이시아, 인도, 중국, 미국, 우즈베키스탄, 싱가포르 등 세계 20여 국가에 파트너를 두고 있으며, 인도와 말레이시아에서는 이미 허가를 얻어 판매를 시작했습니다. 향후 3년 안에 이들 파트너 국가에서 의료기기 허가를 취득하는 것이 단기적인 목표입니다. 허가된 국가에서는 연간 500대 수출을 목표로 하고 있으며, 6월 25일 IVRA 행사가 그 기폭제가 될 것으로 기대하고 있습니다. 인류는 앞으로 수많은 질병에 노출될 것이며, 많은 사람이 피해를 입을 것입니다. 저희 아디포랩스는 2025년까지 가정에서 손쉽게 자신의 건강을 체크하고 면역 증강으로 암을 예방·치료할 수 있는 장비를 개발하기 위해 연구에 매진하고 있습니다. 10년 안에 가정용 AI 의료기기 생산과 함께 세계 1등 의료기기 제조사로 성장하는 것이 장기적인 비전입니다.

정말 열심히 달리고 계시는 듯합니다. 그러면 CEO로서 대표님의 경영철학은 무엇인지요?
저는 남을 배려하는 마음으로 삶을 살고, 타인보다 먼저 솔선수범하는 자세로 살아가려고 노력합니다. 기업을 운영하면 수익 창출이 첫 번째인데, 정당한 방법으로 다른 기업에게 피해를 주지 않고 함께 살아가는 기업이 되려고 노력합니다. 배려는 수많은 동지를 만들 수 있는 최고의 무기이며, 기업은 수많은 협력자가 있어야 성장한다고 생각합니다. 식당을 운영해도 손님들의 인심을 잃으면 그 식당은 성공할 수 없습니다. 타인을 배려하고 타인의 마음을 얻을 수 있는 기업인이 되는 것이 저의 경영철학입니다.

인생의 좌우명이나 가장 좋아하는 격언이 있으시다면?
제가 어릴 때 어머니는 “남자가 마지막 가는 길은 도둑질”이라고 항상 말씀해주셨습니다. 제 인생의 좌우명은 ‘남의 것을 탐하지 말고 땀 흘려 노력해서 정직한 인생을 살자’입니다. 노력 없이 쉽게 버는 돈은 그만큼 가치 없이 쉽게 잃는다는 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 내 것을 소중하게 여기고 남의 것을 탐하지 않는 삶을 살고자 합니다.

대표님만의 건강관리 비법이 있으시다면?
운동을 열심히 하고 스트레스 안 받으려고 노력하죠. 또 시간이 되면 여행을 많이 다니려고 노력하고 있습니다. 마음이 건강해야 몸도 건강하다고 믿습니다. 그리고 꾸준히 리미션1℃를 사용하는 게 건강의 비결인 듯합니다.

끝으로 지금까지 회사를 이끌어오면서 가장 기억에 남는 일은 무엇인지요?
지난해 5월 서산의료원에서 민간인인 제가 방호복을 입고 코로나19 바이러스 감염 환자를 치료한 경험이 가장 기억에 남습니다. 당시 필리핀 환자들이 한국어를 전혀 못해서 저희 딸아이와 함께 격리 병동에 들어가 며칠간 환자들을 치료했습니다. 덕분에 아내에게 혼도 났고요. 전 세계 수많은 의료진이 바이러스를 치료하기 위해 사투를 벌이고 있는데, 이때의 경험은 다시 한번 의료진들의 희생에 감사하는 소중한 기억으로 남아있습니다. 

Leading the Post-COVID-19 era with High-Frequency Thermal Treatment Devices

You have put all your efforts into distributing the high-frequency cancer treatment device, REMISSION 1℃, to the Korean and foreign medical device markets. What is the current status of Korean and overseas expansion?
REMISSION 1℃ is currently being used as a cancer treatment device in 100 locations nationwide, including major hospitals such as Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Gangnam Severance Hospital, Daejeon University Hospital, Wonkwang University Hospital, and other general hospitals, nursing hospitals, medical centers and private hospitals, etc. We are working hard to realize the dream of extending lifespan. In 2018, we signed a partnership contract with the Chairman Mr. Mohamed Jinna of United World Halal Development and obtained Halal and Shariah certification. Therefore, REMISSION 1℃ is gaining attention as a medical device for Muslims in Islamic countries. REMISSION 1℃ does not treat by intoxicating body with chemotherapy or surgeries, which are religiously forbidden in Islamic countries, but it treats cancer and other diseases by boosting the immune system of body. By focusing on their interest in Halal (God Permitted) products we are continuously consulting and advancing into Middle Eastern countries. In line with the ASEAN New Southern Policy, which is South Korea's core policy, there were held continuous consultations, seminars and exhibitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, India, as well as China, Cameroon, Angola, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South America, Honduras and Russia. Through which we have proven the therapeutic effect of REMISSION 1℃ and expanded the global market via clinical trials and sales. Unfortunately, there are delays due to COVID-19 pandemic, but don’t they say “there is always an opportunity in crisis”? So, we used this opportunity to find the ways for COVID-19 treatment. 

Last year, you launched IVRA(International Virus Research Alliance), an international medical cooperative to overcome COVID-19. What kind of activities has IVRA been doing since its inception?
Based on the common medical knowledge that viruses such as COVID-19 are not resilient to heat, a meaningful international scientific seminar dedicated to end COVID-19 Pandemic was held at COEX, Seoul. Despite 2 years long contraction due to the COVID-19 pandemic Korean and foreign medical officials, representatives from each embassy, and nearly 100 medical personnel from 30 countries around the world participated online and the seminar was successfully completed with sponsorship of the scientific conference to end COVID-19. In relation to which, there have been a flood of inquiries from Korean and international medical representatives and government officials. The International Virus Research Alliance (IVRA), which was formed at the time focused on preparing treatment way for ‘Living with COVID-19’ era, rather than preventing infectious diseases through vaccines. The goal was to induce international cooperation by using REMISSION 1℃ to treat COVID-19 patients and to secure treatment data to prepare for “Living with COVID-19” era. This was because we predicted that our medical device REMISSION 1℃ would be a game changer that presents a new medical paradigm for the treatment of viral diseases such as COVID-19 with 'thermal therapy' and 'immunotherapy'. However, it is not the limit of IVRA. IVRA plans to share future treatment directions and research results at home and abroad during the second general meeting. Lastly, IVRA invited 400 people including Korean and foreign medical personnel, government officials and medical staff from member countries to an international conference set on June 25th of this year. So we are preparing for conference and follow-up plans. It is said that viral epidemics appear every five years in the 21st century. Through this IVRA seminar, officials from each country came to agreement that high-frequency hyperthermia is effective in preventing conversion to severe disease and treatment of infections by applying the principle that ‘thermal therapy and immunotherapy are effective for viral infections’. In addition, REMISSION 1℃ has already proved to be effective, in humanity’s long cherished dream, to treat cancer. Therefore,  the goal of sponsoring IVRA academic seminar is to elevate the status of REMISSION 1℃ by presenting cases of cancer treatment and pain relief.

COVID-19 Pandemic is entering an endemic, but still many people are infected with Coronavirus. Accordingly, it is expected that coronavirus treatment through high-frequency hyperthermia will be more popular.
The working principle of REMISSION 1℃ is sophisticated but surprisingly simple. When the high-frequency is passed through the human body, frictional heat is generated due to the rotation, collision, and distortion of ionic charges in the cells of the human body due to the intersection of (+) and (-) charges. This is called deep fever(heat). Therefore, when the temperature of the human body rises, it promotes blood circulation and boosts immune system, and treats heat-prone inflammation, virus-infected cells, and cancer. In addition, it is a proven medical device that relieves pain and has fewer side effects. What is noteworthy here is that when deep heat is generated, NK Cells, the autoimmune cells of our body, are activated to the maximum as the body temperature rises. The medical community judged that if the activity of these cells increased, it could also treat the virus, which served as an opportunity to treat COVID-19 patients. It is in line with the logic that the cold is easily cured in early stages by warming the body and having a fever. We will do our best to equip our bodies to heal itself against numerous viruses which will come.

I understand that a large-scale IVRA seminar will be held in Korea in this June. What are the topics and key issues of this seminar?
In May last year, we signed a research agreement with Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital and Seosan Medical Center in Chungcheongnam-do to treat COVID-19 and donated ‘REMISSION 1℃’, a medical high-frequency hyperthermia device, to Seosan Medical Center for COVID-19 patients. The results of this study were announced through IVRA, and it received attention locally and globally. IVRA Chairman Dr. Yoo Seung-mo (Director of Yesan Myongji Hospital) said, “The issue of contagious diseases such as COVID-19 is not limited to one country, and despite the efforts to solve it mutations continue. Therefore, there are limitations in vaccine development, so we expect that the IVRA event to confirm the possibility of treatment with immunity rather than conventional diagnosis and vaccine methods. Thus, play a pivotal role in preparing for the future.” According to Ms. Grace Han, the head of overseas sales team, there are frequent inquiries not only from ASEAN countries but also from the Middle East, Chad in Africa, and Honduras in South America. In line with the IVRA support policy, there are negotiations on the premise of mutual policy support and data sharing. So it is possible that in IVRA member countries, coronavirus treatment through high-frequency hyperthermia could become a routine. In addition, UNWHD Chairman Mr. Mohamed Jinna, who is currently actively working on equipment projects with the Iranian and Turkish governments, is now actively discussing the project with the government of Singapore, South Africa, Israel and Mauritius. Also Malaysia's AdipoLABs branch is currently coordinating with Malaysia Ministry of Health to schedule for the donation of REMISSION 1℃ in a project with Philippines, including. It is sign of the beginning of the “Living with COVID-19” era. We are proud that the only preparation for the current ‘Living with COVID-19’ era is in the high-frequency hyperthermia device. As a result of sharing IVRA's future treatment data, we plan to increase treatment cases based on a well-designed coronavirus treatment protocol and continue joint research with international scholars.
